Pre-planning Research
Empirical Data:
~ The temperature the begonia lives in is 21 Celsius during the day and 19 Celsius at night. ~ The begonia is 25 cm tall. ~ The diameter of the plant including the leaves is approximately 20 cm. |
Explore Ideas:
~ Add fertilizer to the soil and see if the leaves are less droopy and brown after 2, 5, and 7 days. ~ Offer a specific amount of water (1 cup) twice a day to keep the plant more hydrated. ~ Put the begonia outside during the day so it has a colder climate. _ Put the begonia in a bigger pot. ~ Add soil to the current pot so it is filled all the way up to the rim of the pot. |
Plan Summary:
Add a small amount of fertilizer to the soil of the begonia and water the plant twice a day with a cup of water each time. Add more soil on top of the fertilizer so that the soil Comes up to the rim of the pot. This should provide the begonia with enough nutrients for it to take care of its leaves. |
What success looks like:
For this plan to be a success, the diameter of the brown spots on the leaves would have to be gone completely which would show us that the plant is healthy again.

The Steps
Plan Steps:
- Measure the initial diameter of the brown spots on the begonia’s leaves in centimeters with a ruler. Record this data in a table.
- Add a single scoop of fertilizer to my begonia to add nutrients like phosphorus, potassium, and a small amount of nitrogen to help with foliage growth, root growth, and the absorption of trace elements. IMPORTANT: only add the advised amount on the container as too much is not good for the plant.
- Add soil on top of the fertilizer to add more natural nutrients to the soil for the begonia to use. Add enough soil so that it comes up all the way to the rim of the pot.
- Wash your hands so that there is no fertilizer left on them for your safety as chemicals can cause skin issues and the soil can have potentially harmful organisms living in it.
- Offer the begonia a cup of water twice a day by putting the water in a dish for the begonia to soak up while not over watering it (which can happen if you water the plant from the top).
- Record the area of brown on the leaves by measuring its diameter with a ruler in centimeters after 2, 5, and 7 days.
